AS part of an ongoing effort to educate the youth on financial management in order to engage in the global economy, the Junior Achievement (JA) Brunei has developed educational programmes for primary to ‘A’ Level students targeting both public and private schools.
This was revealed at a briefing by Louis Tan, Managing Director of JA Brunei, during an interview with the Sunday Bulletin yesterday, which was held at the iCentre in Berakas.
“Our aim is to inspire and prepare the youth to succeed in the global economy by providing students with programmes on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship,” said Tan.
According to him, the programmes involve three main parties which include schools and students, volunteers as experiential models, and funding sponsors from multi-national companies, banks, telecoms and construction companies.
As part of an initiative under the umbrella of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Baiduri Bank Group, HSBC and the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) have been main sponsors in support of JA’s programmes.
According to Tan, since its establishment in Brunei in September 2012, which began as a pilot project involving 250 students from six schools handpicked by the Ministry of Education, JA was given the opportunity to collaborate with schools in the Brunei-Muara District.
Following the success of the project, JA has conducted programmes with 14 other schools.
“We are also looking to gain funding from other financial institutions because we plan to branch out to other districts such as Temburong, Tutong and Kuala Belait. In 2016, we aim to approach 18 more schools”, he said.
Workshops for primary school students include an introduction to financial planning, activities in the form of games, and summary and review, which are conducted with the assistance of volunteers and the presence of teachers.
The programmes kits are structured according to appropriate age groups, which include ‘More Than Money’ for primary students, ‘JA Economics for Success’ for year seven to eight and ‘JA Company Programme’ for ‘A’ Level students.
